By the time Monday morning came around, I was chomping at the bit to get started. My first call was to Rodger Frost. I wanted to ask him about the police scene during the time Beaâs relative was alive. I left him a voicemail telling him what I wanted, and gave him my phone number. I crossed my fingers that he would get back to me.
Since there was nothing more I could do on Beaâs family until I heard from him, I went back to work on the John Doe case. There werenât that many matches in the database, and those that were there appeared to be distant relatives. This was going to take some time.
I opened my genealogy program and began to build a sketchy family tree. Most of the time, itâs easier to work backward instead of forward. But this time it appeared I was starting somewhere in the middle. I entered all the data and decided to let the program do its thing and make connections for me.
Just as I closed out the program, my phone pinged. A text from Professor Frost. He said he had classes all week, but asked if we could meet over the weekend.
After pouring another cup of coffee, I went into my office to check my email. There was one regarding the files of Adriannaâs parents. I could get them, but had to pay a copying fee. So I called the county and gave them my credit card number. The nice clerk offered to scan them and send them in an email. Perfect!
The anticipation was killing me, and it seemed to be taking forever to get the files. But within an hour, they showed up in my email. I eagerly read the pages as the printer spit them out. Adriannaâs motherâs file came through first. It was unremarkable, and the man whoâd hit her was apprehended. Heâs been in prison for the last six months on a charge of armed robbery.
Well, that ended that. Her death truly had been just a tragic accident.
While I waited for Adriannaâs fatherâs file to print out, I went into the living room to open the blinds. As I did, I saw Jason looking out his front window, toward my house. So nothing had changed. I was hoping the Jason I saw the other night was back, and the possessive and controlling Jason had disappeared, but no such luck.
I heard the printer stop and grabbed the pages as I plopped down in my desk chair. There was a picture of the victim included in the documents, and for some reason he looked hauntingly familiar, like Iâd seen him before, but I couldnât figure out where.
I shook my head. Impossible. He was dead when I was a little girl, and Iâd never been to Paytonville. Adrianna said he disappeared when she was six, and we were about the same age.
According to the file, Tony Martinelli was last seen leaving a bar called the Stone Mill, in Paytonville, around midnight.
